Everywhere in California went off… except LA

Even on a weak La Niña, November came with too much North in most of the swells — Barring this gif from the 14th & some local windswell magic on the 24th, you had to drive to find it.

What we’ve been hoping for is the Jet Stream wobbling South, and it’s doing just that (per StormSurf) on the 9th of December. It won’t stay in the same spot all winter, but generally the Jet Stream sits near 45-55 degrees in October through November and 35-40 degrees in December through February — so we’re about to get the green light.

When the Jet Stream wobbles South into the 35-40 degree range, those 295-300+ northern angles turn into more favorable WNWs. It’s what we were hoping for all October and November and it’s finally happening.

Trunking it in December?!

We saw some of you without a wetsuit on in November. Not out of defiance either, it’s just been warm because of “the blob” (or NEP25A) and weak upwelling.

The blob is a bit of a puzzle but the upwelling is more predictable. For context, we talked about La Niña being like a “bubble” in the East Pacific from the tradewinds blowing all the near-surface warm water from the East Pacific to the Southwest Pacific. The tradewinds are expected to increase in December and colder water temperatures to follow.

TLD;R — Blobs and bubbles for ya in December. Go get that 4/3, the water will get cold.
